Invited Research Keynote: The Classification and Characterization of Acute Suicidal Crises

CE Hours 1

About this course

Suicide risk has traditionally been included at the symptom level in diagnostic and classification systems, overlooking evidence that suicide occurs across every existing psychiatric condition (as well as among individuals without a diagnosable condition) and that suicidal crises may have a rapid onset. This presentation will provide a brief history of the nature of suicidality within diagnostic/classification systems; describe the conceptual, clinical, and practical rationale for a suicide-specific diagnosis (alongside considerations and limitations associated with the lack of such a diagnosis); highlight a series of research findings underlying the phenomenology of suicidal crises and two proposed suicide-specific diagnoses that may improve our characterization of suicidal crises; propose a potential synthesis of these two proposed diagnoses based on emerging research; and discuss future research directions that are necessary to improve our understanding, assessment, intervention, and prevention of suicidal crises.

Learning Objectives

  • List the symptoms of two proposed suicide-specific diagnoses: Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance and Suicide Crisis Syndrome.
  • Describe the crisis symptoms that are most strongly related to near-term suicide-related outcomes.
  • Identify at least one benefit and one drawback of the inclusion of a suicide-specific diagnosis in the DSM.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, MFT's, Psychiatrists, and nurses.

  • Megan L. Rogers, PhD

Dr. Megan Rogers is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Texas State University. She completed her BA in Psychology at North Carolina State University, her PhD in Clinical Psychology at Florida State University, and her predoctoral clinical internship at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Rogers's research primarily focuses on short-term transdiagnostic risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors, with an emphasis on improving our understanding and assessment of acute suicidal crises. She is also interested in improving suicide risk assessment and management through leveraging indirect assessments and digital real-time interventions. To this end, she has published over 190 peer-reviewed manuscripts and led/contributed to numerous externally funded projects. In recognition of her early-career research contributions, Dr. Rogers was honored with the Association for Psychological Science's Rising Star Award and the American Association of Suicidology's Edwin S. Shneidman Award. In addition to her position as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Rogers serves as a co-chair of the Suicide Research Symposium.
